Hi, I'm Myron Kandel, president of New Hampshire's Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection.
I'm here at the Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, during College Convention 2008, which is enabling hundreds of college and high school students from around the nation to get a first-hand taste of presidential politics at the grass-roots level.
Our series is called "More than Money, Myron Kandel and the Presidential Candidates. It's being produced in cooperation with New Hampshire Public Television. The focus is on business ethics, corporate responsibility and investor protection. All critical issues for the nation's economy.
My contention is that anyone who hopes to occupy the White House a little more than a year from now should be willing to discuss how he or she will protect the interests of the nation's investors and help keep American companies on the straight and narrow.
I'm pleased to have Representative Ron Paul, Republican of Texas, as today's guest.
Ron Paul is an obstetrician who served as an Air Force flight surgeon during the Vietnam War and continued delivering babies even while serving in Congress. He ran for President in 1988 as the candidate of the Libertarian Party, but now he's seeking his own party's nomination. His views are far from conventional. He favors abolishing the federal income tax and the Federal Reserve, withdrawing from NATO and the U.N. and eliminating many other government agencies. He shocked the political establishment by raising more money on the internet in one day than anyone had done before.
Ron Paul, welcome to this edition of More Than Money.
Congressman, should the government have a role in protecting investors?
